Extractions
At Oakwood Dental, our first priority is always to do everything we can to preserve a patient’s natural teeth. Sometimes, however, a tooth is simply too far compromised to be saved. In these cases, tooth extraction is necessary to eliminate painful symptoms, prevent infection, safeguard the patient’s health, and protect the health of the surrounding teeth.
Why Does My Tooth Need to Be Extracted?
Teeth can become compromised for various reasons, including disease, injury, tooth decay, and more. Some instances when our dentists might recommend tooth extraction include:
- Severe and irreversible tooth decay and damage
- Severely cracked or broken teeth
- Advanced periodontal disease that has led to degenerated periodontal ligaments and a loosened tooth
- An impacted tooth
- A tooth positioned incorrectly that could harm neighboring teeth
- In preparation for orthodontic treatment
Our dentists are always available to talk with you about the reasons why your tooth needs to be extracted and what to expect during the tooth extraction process.
Tooth Extractions at Oakwood Dental
There are two types of tooth extractions, and our dentists are experienced in performing both.
Simple Tooth Extraction
A simple tooth extraction occurs when a tooth and its roots are intact enough that it can be loosened and pulled without risking the tooth breaking apart or any pieces of it remaining behind, below the gum line.
Surgical Tooth Extraction
Surgical tooth extraction is necessary when a tooth is broken into several pieces, impacted, below the gum line, or too weak to be pulled without breaking apart.
Which Type of Tooth Extraction Is Right for You?
The type of tooth extraction that is right for you depends on the state and strength of the tooth in question. To determine whether you need a simple extraction or surgical extraction, our dentist can first take a set of dental X-rays to assess the structures of your tooth above and below the gum line.
What To Expect When You Need a Tooth Extraction
The tooth extraction process varies slightly depending on whether your tooth can simply be pulled or requires surgical extraction. Once we have evaluated your dental X-rays, our dentist can talk with you about what you should expect during your appointment and provide you with instructions for preparing for the extraction.
Whichever type of extraction you require, we do everything we can to ensure you are comfortable and relaxed and experience no pain during the appointment.
